The power went out, it stayed out, and the contents of the fridge went in the trash. Or the season is coming and you would rather not repeat it. A battery inverter is the quiet version of the generator in the garage: no fuel to hunt for after a storm, no fumes, nothing to wheel outside in the rain at 2am.

Start with what has to stay cold

Back up the fridge first, then the freezer, then the router and a few lamps. That short list is where the money is.

• Refrigerator: 100 to 800W running, with a startup spike two to three times higher.
• Chest freezer: 100 to 400W.
• Router, modem, LED lamps and phone charging: under 100W for the lot.

A 2000W continuous inverter carries that list with headroom for the compressor spikes. Air conditioning is a separate question: AC startup surge is the largest load in most houses, so size it against the locked rotor amps on the data plate, and expect to be on a 4000W system with a 24V bank.

The inverter is one third of the system

An inverter converts, it does not store. You still need a battery bank sized to the hours you want to cover and a way to refill it, solar or grid. Buying the inverter alone and expecting backup is the most expensive mistake in this category.
